			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re not quite the fitness fanatic you might be daunted by the thought of entering an event where people are competing to be the fastest across three different forms of fitness. But you shouldn&#8217;t be, the triathlon world is full of people of mixed abilities, from young to old, fit to fat. You don&#8217;t just have to go all out and compete in a full triathlon either; many people don&#8217;t even do the full event, maybe just two out of the three for fun.</p>
<p>That said, it&#8217;s no walk in the park, it is a sporting event to be taken seriously and taking part without any training could risk injury or serious health issues. The key to success is training, lots and lots of training. The event consists of three activities, swimming, cycling and running, assuming you know how to run, the only thing you might need help with is cycling and swimming, there is no point doing generic exercise without practicing the three disciplines. </p>
<p>There a few pieces of kit you will need to begin with; running shoes, a warm swimsuit/triathlon suit, and a bike. Shoes and a swimsuit are fairly cheap but getting a bike is more serious than it sounds. You won&#8217;t necessarily be able to just pull your old BMX out of the garage and make it work, if you have an old bike take it to a bike shop and see if it is worth repairing. If can often be more cost-effective to buy a new one that fixing up an old one as you still end up with an old bike. The bike needs to be suitable for the event, if you want to get serious there are triathlon specific bikes but a decent lightweight mountain bike will do. You will need to train on this and learn basic maintenance in case of an accident, fixing a puncture is a must as is a pump and spare inner tube.</p>
<p>You are best off choosing a &#8216;sprint&#8217; triathlon as this is a much shorter distance as usual, it doesn&#8217;t matter if you have run a marathon before as you use different muscle groups and it&#8217;s a different ball game.  The sprint triathlon consists of a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and a 5km run. People taking part in this kind of even are likely to be beginners too which will help you feel better about being out of breath.</p>
<p>You will need to begin training early, it will take several months for your body to adapt but if you are in reasonably good shape and are already into sports you could probably train in as little as three months. Focus on your weaknesses at first, if you are a cyclist, get used to swimming and running and vice versa. Create a training schedule, have a strict timetable of at least 1 &#8211; 3 hours per day, 5 &#8211; 6 days per week. Vary your workout intensity, focus on sprinting and power one day but distance the next, this will help your body build up both strength and endurance. </p>
<p>Intensify your training to a point where you do two of the three activities on a few of the days each week, perhaps to triathlon distance. You could attempt a whole triathlon as training but bear in mind that this is very exhausting and could take up a couple of days in recovery which will interrupt your training schedule.</p>
<p>Eat well, you aren&#8217;t on a diet to lose weight as the training should do this for you but ensure you are taking in the appropriate calories, protein and vitamins each day to sustain your activities. This will aid your training and also get your body in the right condition for lengthy exercise. You could vary your diet in the days leading up to your event but consult a dietician before anything drastic, for the event, which will probably be an early start, have a light healthy breakfast with fruit. Invest in some decent energy supplements for the race which you should experiment with before hand but not use to train. Finally, take care and good luck.</p>

<p>A food journal is just a tool to get us to our destination. But where do we want to go? We want to become conscious eaters who are always aware of what and how much we&#8217;re eating, without struggle or effort. We can&#8217;t change our eating habits until we become aware of them. But be warned that this isn&#8217;t easy so don&#8217;t become discouraged. We&#8217;re all busy people and it&#8217;s hard to stay focused on any one effort, no matter how worthy. Just keep in mind that losing weight or improving our health is so important that the effort is worth the struggle.</p>
<p>If you commit to keeping a food journal, be prepared for a struggle. Just as becoming aware of your eating isn&#8217;t easy, neither is revealing your habits to yourself by writing them down. There will be days when you fail and if you know that, you will be less likely to give up. Because make not mistake, there are multiple rewards for making this effort and persisting until you succeed.</p>
<p>1. Have you ever been around people who insist that they &#8220;eat like a bird&#8221; &#8211; yet you see them frequently gorging on rich, heavy meals and desserts. They may not be lying when they insist that they eat very little because they may be very unaware of what they&#8217;re actually doing. You are most likely the same. If you don&#8217;t understand why you&#8217;re overweight or why your cholesterol is too high or why you feel sluggish and bloated, then examining you actual habits, rather than what you think about them, may be very revealing. It&#8217;s worth finding out, isn&#8217;t it?</p>
<p>2. Lots of time we eat when we&#8217;re not hungry. There are a vast number of emotional reasons to stuff something in our mouths and these flimsy reasons range from deep depression (eating to &#8221;feel better&#8221;) to the most joyous event that, naturally, calls for a food celebration. None of us wants to confess that we are emotional eaters, but keeping a food journal may well reveal these bad habits. Once we recognize that we&#8217;re misusing food, we can learn to deal with any emotional issues in a more constructive way.</p>
<p>3. When you clearly see what foods you&#8217;re eating, you will absolutely be able to make small changes that add up, over time, to major alterations in your habits. Perhaps you eat a lot of fruit that is canned or frozen with lots of sugar. You can experiment with using fruits that have no sugar and add a bit of stevia for sweetener. If that change is successful, try substituting brown rice for white, whole grain bread for white and using egg whites in your baking, rather than whole eggs. Don&#8217;t even try to make huge changes in your eating habits because you are almost certain to fail. Instead, try one small change at a time. Some will be successful and pleasing and some will not but this is the best way to succeed with any major changes in life &#8211; and eating habits ARE major!</p>
<p>4. It is very possible to be thin &#8211; and unhealthy. Someone who is stays thin by eating very little, yet what they eat is potato chips and cokes, is certain to be missing out on important nutrients provided by food.
